Step 1: Start with a square sheet of paper, and turn it so that it looks like a diamond.
Step 2: Diagonally fold the opposite corners together, and make a crease along the full length of the paper. Rotate the paper 90 degrees and repeat the fold so that the lines intersect.
Step 3: Grab the long sides of the paper and fold it in half down the center so that it looks like a rectangle. Rotate the paper 90 degrees and repeat the fold so that the lines intersect.
Step 4: Turn the paper over. Carefully collapse the sheet of paper by bringing the four corners together so that it becomes a square. You have now made a square base, which can be used for many kinds of models.
Step 5: With the opening of the collapsed square positioned at the bottom, take the front side corners and fold them inward so that the edges meet in the center. The completed folded should look like a kite.
Step 6: Fold the triangle section at the top along the dotted line.
Step 7: Unfold steps 5 and 6.
Step 8: Lift the front bottom corner up, using the fold created in step 6.
Step 9: As you lift up, bring the side edges in toward the center, flattening the creases created in step 5.
Step 10: Flip the model over so that the diamond shape at the front. Repeat steps 5–9.
Step 11: You have no completed a bird base, which is used as a starting point for many models. Following the image below, grab the bottom point of each side so that the outer edge of each point is perpendicular to the central vertical line. (See step 13 for reference.)
Step 12: Using the folds in step 11, do an inside reverse fold on each side. (The following image shows you how to do this fold step by step.)
Step 13: Fold the top half of the model down along the existing center crease.
Step 14: Unfold the top flap that was folded down in step 13; be sure to leave the small triangle and the bottom flap folded down. Turn the model around so that the back side now faces the front.
Step 15: Fold the model in half vertically.
Step 16: Using the image below as a reference, do an inside reverse fold on the top section of the model to create the beak.
